The Start of a New Church Plant – GCDC

Back in 2012 when I joined Upward Bound Study Center in Monterey Park as a volunteer ESL teacher, we launched a “Listening Campaign” in the summer in which we visited the immigrant families, a total of thirty or so, of all UBSC students attending our summer school. I still remember a story of a new immigrant family who escaped a fire in the middle of a chilly night. The family of four was woken up by the fire alarm because their apartment was caught on fire. In their sleepwear, the whole family rushed outside. Fire trucks came and the whole neighborhood woke up and some stood outside to watch the fire being put out. With a 6-month-old baby crying in her arm, the mother asked a neighbor whom they knew to lend them a blanket in order to keep the baby warm. Sadly, that neighbor simply turned and walked away. To their surprise, a stranger came up and offered help. He gave them a blanket and drove the family to a nearby motel for temporary stay. Stories like that truly touched our hearts. We had been praying for God’s direction on how to better care for these immigrants in our community due to an influx of Asian immigrants in the previous years. After the Listening Campaign, a few of us in FEC Arcadia shared about our experience with our small groups and other church members. We had long discussions and prayers about whether God was sending us to this new community to start a new church plant serving this unique people group.

Our reason for starting a new church was threefold. First of all, there was a trend of new immigrants coming into Monterey Park and surrounding cities in those few years. In fact, the Asian population growth rate was in double digits for the past decade according to city demographic data. God was telling us something through the trend – These new immigrants were eager for a community of love. Secondly, these new immigrants formed a unique culture that was very different than any of our existing FEC member churches in the surrounding neighborhood. Throughout the years, Upward Bound Study Center had done some gospel work and had channeled some new believers to various local churches. However, due to the cultural differences, almost all of these new believers left their churches not long after their first visits there. We saw a need of starting a new church for these new immigrants in their own culture. Thirdly, there was a need for the spiritual growth of our people, including worshipping God, teaching of God’s word, and discipleship of God’s people. Several incidents happened within a short span of just a few months in which our students, with no proper teaching or knowledge of basic Christian faith, were asked and almost forced to join some not-so-authentic “churches” including a cultic group in an adjacent city. By the grace and intervention of God, we were able to stop the students from being led astray.

After much discussion and prayer seeking God’s guidance and confirmation, our team started sharing this vision of a new church plant with the leaders of both the Arcadia church and the FEC Association. With the blessings and support from both, we officially launched our church planting effort in the summer of 2014, starting with a high school students group meeting weekly on Saturdays. One year later, Grace Covenant Disciples Church started her first Sunday worship service on Aug 16, 2015 at Upward Bound Study Center. In the same year, we rented the unit right next door to the center, and it became our church office in Monterey Park. The church planting effort was underway.

In the past six years, GCDC has gone through her growing pains during early childhood stage. Families moved out of the area due to work-related reasons. Students also transferred to universities in other locations. Some people even stopped coming to church once their physical needs were met. Other challenges included the difficulty of finding a common meeting time for working parents with very different work schedules. On the other hand, we continued to see God’s work among our members. Many immigrant families were cared for and encouraged in their early days of settling in this new country. Three students accepted Christ as their personal savior and lord, and were baptized in 2016. Some families have become part of our church core group today. The new church plant is moving forward by God’s grace. Even though we may continue to face many challenges ahead, we are more confident that God will carry us forward through His amazing work in and through us for building His kingdom in this community.
